A Super Mouse typing "Hi there" in the chat

Chat is a feature in Mope.io that allows players to communicate with one another by causing a text box to appear above players that use it. It can be used by pressing Enter and typing in text and pressing Enter again. The chat feature was introduced on October 7, 2016. All languages are supported.

The chat feature can be disabled by ticking the "No Names & Chat" box in the settings cog on the home screen. In addition, the chat filter can be disabled in settings as well.

As of July 30, 2021, customized chat cannot be used by players that are not logged-in to an account. However, logged-out players will be able to see chat messages from logged-in players.

As of June 18, 2025, players on the Android version of Mope.io Mobile cannot use chat, and will not be able to see any chat messages at all.

Technical[]

  • The player must be logged-in to a Shop account and not on the Android version of the game in order to use the chat feature.
    • As mentioned, chat will be completely invisible on Android. For other versions, logged-out players can still see chat from logged-in players.
  • By pressing Enter once on the desktop version of the game or the dedicated "Chat" button on non-Android Mope.io Mobile, a text box will appear, and the player can type into it. The box has a certain character limit. By pressing Enter again, the text that was typed into the chat will appear above the player's animal in a small rectangle. If no text was entered, the text box instead disappears. Typed messages disappear after about five seconds.
    • As of July 9, 2025, most emojis are disabled. If a message with them is sent, the emojis are automatically stripped. A message containing only emojis will be replaced by an empty character when sent.
  • The chat feature can be disabled by going into the settings on the Home Screen, and clicking the "No Names & Chat" box. Once clicked, the player will be unable to chat and will not see any chat messages sent by other players.
  • The chat has a censor that replaces profanities and curse words with 8's if the player attempts to type them into the chat. If the player's chat message contains a banned word, the entire message will be censored with 8's. The censor can be toggled off in settings.
  • Chat also can appear automatically when certain animals use their special abilities. For example, when the Tiger uses its "Ambush Attack" ability, it will say "ROAR!!" in the chat.
    • The Bigfoot has the passive ability of occasionally (and uncontrollably) speaking words in the chat such as "OOGA BOOGA!". The Desert Rat and Shrimp will say "SQUEAK!" and "SPLASH!", respectively, when their passive sprinting ability activates.
  • Commands are inputted through chat. Most are exclusive to Developer Mode and are inaccessible to regular players. The only command accessible to all logged-in players is /anim-switch.

Appearance[]

Messages sent through chat are displayed above the animal in yellow text in a colored background. The color of the background changes depending on which biome the player is in, matching the default outline color of animals in the biome. It will be green in the Land and Forest biomes, blue in the Ocean,[note 1] yellow in the Desert, white in the Arctic, and red orange at the Volcano. If the player moves into another biome, it will change color to match.

Multiple messages sent in a short period will stack on top of one another, with the newest message being the lowest. Messages will only stack up to five lines. If more messages are sent, the uppermost message immediately disappears and the rest are moved up.

Chat spoken while in a hiding hole or whirlpool instead appears above the hiding hole. This can make it difficult to distinguish messages sent by multiple players in the hiding hole/whirlpool.

Criticism[]

The chat feature was criticized in the past being an outlet of toxicity for players, and for promoting the concept of teaming due it allowing players to easily communicate. Until 2020, the chat had no filter whatsoever, meaning players were able to use many insults and derogatory language.

In response to this, a profanity filter was implemented in August 2020 that censors inappropriate words spoken in the chat. For instance, the phrase "team" was originally filtered to show as "fight" in order to prevent teaming. While this effort did receive approval, it was still noted that there were loopholes around it, such as typing spaces between each letter.

A more comprehensive chat filter was introduced by Addicting Games in February 2024, which gave warnings and even muted players who continuously used banned phrases in the chat. This was reverted by 3AM Experiences on November 15, 2024, and the old system returned: disallowed words are censored, but players will not be muted.

Since around June 2025, the chat filter was expanded to censor even more words: now if a chat message contains a single banned word, the entire message will be censored (using "8" instead of asterisks now), instead of censoring only the banned word. The new system has received some criticism for being too excessive/restrictive, with many common phrases being censored. For example, the Hedgehog will say "POOF!" in the chat when using its "Spikes" ability; however, this is now censored. Since the new chat filter will censor entire messages, it can be difficult to understand what someone is trying to say and determine which specific word is banned.

Trivia[]

  • Chat has almost been around since the start of the game.
  • Until an unknown update, chat at the Volcano had a green background, the same as in the Land biome.
  • There used to be a more specific chat filter system with more consequences in order to prevent profanities and toxicity against other players.[1] However, the filter has since been altered to only censor common curse-words.
    • As part of this older filter, when "team" was typed with no spaces (any capitalized letters still apply), the phrase "fight" would appear instead. This was probably an attempt to prevent teaming, though it was largely unsuccessful.
    • The more comprehensive chat filter has returned in June 2025, censoring words with 8's rather than asterisks.

Glitches[]

  • Occasionally, the chat may not work: the box sometimes doesn't appear when the player presses Enter.
